Today is National Wordsmith Day!

No, I didn't make that up. (It's also Lumpy Rug Day--not sure what that's all about, but talk about boring blog material.) So what is a wordsmith exactly? Here's what the dictionary has to say:

word·smith (wûrd'smĭth') n. 1. A fluent and prolific writer, especially one who writes professionally. 2. An expert on words.

I love a good wordsmith. I love coming across a wonderfully written phrase that says something succinctly. Flowery phrases and meaningless description bore me. Give me something with meat and say it in a way I've never heard!

I ran across this good line in a Richard Paul Evans novel lately. I had to stop and read it aloud to Kevin (who, really, could care less, but oh well.)

Those who have the softest hearts build the highest walls.
LOVE that! What's even better is when such a line rolls off my fingertips onto the screen. Ah, what a feeling. Yesterday, I wrote this line in my WIP. I loved it because it perfectly summed up my protagonists feelings and fears about love.
It was one thing to let a man in your bed, quite another to let him in your heart.
So, all you wordsmiths, what favorite phrase or sentence has danced onto your screen lately? Or, if your not a wordsmith, what line has grabbed you and begged to be read twice? Come on, it's Wordsmith Day!

WOW! I've been thinking about this so much lately. I've been obsessed with thinking about John 3:16 the past couple weeks...it seems cliche, but when you read it and take it to heart it becomes the most beautiful thing ever written:

For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

It's Christianity in a nutshell...and the promise was meant for ME! How exciting.

I think the preamble of the constitution is also gorgeously worded.

Something I wrote lately that I liked? Um...oh yes. *ahem* "Everyone wants to die happy, but you'll kill yourself trying to find that happiness if you're not looking for God." I felt pretty profound :-D

for me 2 things: john ortberg wrote: "You were made for more than merely avoiding failure." That totally caught me off guard, but he's so right... we were made for spectacular things, and God knows what's going to happen and we need not fear but jsut trust in Him for everything.... so yeah...

2nd... last year, after I got my heart broken (crushed really) i came up with this phrase, which... you might have too read it twice just to make sense of it, but it's a good wordsmith kind of phrase... haahaha: "Guys think they know what we're missing when we aren't with them, but they don't know what they're missing when we're standing right in front of them"... so that's to all the single girls out there, who are struggling with being single and allowing God to take control of our lives and really find the 1 guy for us....

I fell in love with this conversion between a young woman, Riley, and an older Italian man, Leo. It's in Chop Shop by Tim Downs.

"I usually skip dessert," Riley said.

"Skip dessert?" Leo looked around as though the voice had come out of nowhere. "Did someone say 'skip dessert'?"

"I don't eat very much."

"We don't eat dessert," Leo said. "What are we, gluttons? We taste dessert. The entrée feeds the body, but dessert feeds the soul. Dessert is for pleasure, and pleasures are meant to be to be tasted, not consumed. When you skip dessert, you leave with a full belly but an empty heart. Animals eat meat and vegetables, my dear Riley. Dessert is what makes us human."

My favorite, deepest, most life-changing phrase (insert sarcasm here) has to be the one emblazoned on my coffee mug that travels wherever I go and never leaves my hand ...

"life's great! Stay awake for it!"

... showing the inner depths of my heart here tonight, ladies! :)

Ok, the current fave that I penned myself (hey, we gotta love what we do or we wouldn't do it, right?) is this chapter opening:
Some sick, twisted Yankee had to be the inventor of panty hose. No self-respecting southerner would design such a torturous garment. And it had to be a man, too.
