I’ll be sixteen tonight—hey, I write fiction, okay?
How many books or articles have you read that say to take time for yourself, or do something you really love?
Well, tonight my best friend from elementary school days is coming to visit me for the weekend. We have stayed in contact with one another all these years. In fact, Maggie and Lily (Hot Flashes & Cold Cream) were patterned after my friendship with Diana. We probably won’t go rock climbing or bungee jumping (I have my limits), but we might drag out the old records and dance off a pound or two--okay one.
We’ll most likely go see a movie, eat popcorn, talk about “the good old days,” laugh until our sides hurt, eat chocolate, and laugh some more.
When we get together, it’s like all the years just melt away, you know? When I look at her, I see my teenage buddy. We catch up on everything that’s going on with our families and any news of old classmates. It’s a blast from the past every time—and still our friendship is up to date, if that makes sense.
So how about you, do you have a friend or friends like that? Where you can be apart for months, or even years, then within five minutes of getting together again, it’s just like old times? What do you like to do when you get together now (besides make fun of people in the yearbook)?

Diann Hunt writes romantic comedy and humorous women's fiction. She has been happily married forever, loves her family, chocolate, her friends, chocolate, her dog, and well, chocolate.
Cheryl Hodde writes romantic medical suspense under the pen name of Hannah Alexander, using all the input she can get from her husband, Mel, for the medical expertise. For fun she hikes and reads. Out of guilt, she rescues discarded cats. She and Mel are presently taking orders from four pampered strays.

I wish you could be here, too, Kristin! And you're right, we're definitely going to visit DeBrands while she's here!
I absolutely have a friend just like that. Kathy. We became friends the summer we were six and lived down the block from one another until we both left home after high school. While I still live in our home town she never returned home after college to live and instead makes Houston her home. Still, whenever we visit, we pick up exactly where we left off. There is never that "ramping up" period that you have to go through with some friends - that polite small-talk about incidentals. Instead we dive head-first into the really juicy,meaty parts of our lives. I love her to death. And she is opening a coffee shop/Christian book store in the Houston area this fall!!! So all you Houstonians, be on the lookout for Fill Your Cup in October!
Ahh, I have two such friends. Friends who are NOT writers, NOT scrapbookers, who are just my friends from forever! And no matter how long the time between our visits, just hearing each other's voice or seeing one another, it's as if we haven't been a day or mile apart! Bless your visit, Di! :) Oh, and boogie a bit for me--I need to lose a couple of pounds! :)
So fun to hear about your friends! My friend and I had a great time this past weekend, though it ended all too quickly. We laughed, watched movies, and laughed some more. I've already received a beautiful friendship card from her in the mail.
If you have a life-long friend, be good to her. They're a rare find. :-)
