CHILDREN ARE A BLESSING FROM THE LORD

We've all heard it. Shoot, we've all said it. And it's in the Bible, so it must be true. I'm just not quite so sure we believe it. Here's how Webster defines "blessing": Something promoting or contributing to happiness, well-being, or prosperity; a boon.

Given that meaning, I think we can all agree children qualify (most of the time). The thought that struck me on Mother's Day is this: if children are a blessing, why don't we all have nine or ten?

I mean, when God sends other blessings (health, money, love) I don't ever recall wanting a limit.

"Please God, I already have three hundred dollars. You can stop the blessing now."
"God, I have enough good health."
"You know, God, I already have three contracts, and I love them. But I don't want any more."

I don't pretend to have the answers, I'm just posing the question: if children are a blessing, how come I only want three?

hmmmm... they must be a blessing but it takes energy to maintain even the wonderful gifts of life! And there's only so much energy to go around, right? That's why I 'borrow' my nephew and have yet to have my own "little blessing"! Once I up my daily coffee intake to 10 cups instead of 9 I'll consider getting "blessed"!

I agree - why do we limit them - I am still single but I do see your point Denise.

Here's mine and Dh's reason for stopping at four. We ran out of room in the van. Dh actually wanted six, but by the time #4 came, I was wiped out.

Not quite sure why we limit ourselves, but I have observed one trend. Those who have a lot of kids end up with huge blessings later in life in the form of tons of grandkids! And to any parent turned grandparent that's a blessing.

Three's the charm!? While children are a blessing...I have found that in order to BLESS them....I better stop at three!

Intersting take though....maybe we can find other ways to receive more blessings. I have posted our involvement with Foster Care (Part One) on today's post....if you count our foster children (21) we have 24 children! ;) But who's counting!

Thought-provoking post!

Diane

My mother was from a family of 11. My father from a family of 5. My pastor was one of 9 siblings. Out of that group of 25 married adults, the largest number of children is 3. Most of them have 1 or 2 children. Not quite sure why that is (and I've never asked WHY), but I find it interesting. Beth

We also stopped at three, but according to my husband we haven't actually finished. Little does he know....Anyway, we don't have the space, either in our home or our vehicles, for more. Great question!

I think it's because children are GREAT BIG blessings (as opposed to itty bitty ones) and we're just sooo overwhelmed that we can't take it anymore...hahaha!

Becuase you're sane, and because it's a known fact that children rob you of your brain cells and as fiction writers, we need 'em. :o)

My sister and I have discussed this. We come to the conclusion that in order to provide for them in the manner we want, we're stopping at, she has three. I have two.

For me its the energy, as a Mama who works outside the home, I know I barely have enough energy for two. I wanted four, but I knew my energy limit and it wouldn't be fair to them.

I want to enjoy my blessings, not resent them. I've met many mothers who do.

Because children are a blessing that keep on giving? That's my story and I'm sticking with it! :)

I limited mine to one because I got such a late start. I would love more children, but at 40, I fear I'm too set in my ways to change. The thought of morning sickness again makes me nauseous. :))
